AI and ethics

This section is very important for all professionals, especially developers. There are serious legal and ethical issues at stake. While AI like ChatGPT can be helpful there are two distinct ways to think about it’s power:

  1. AI is so smart and powerful, I can use it to do some or much of my work.
  2. AI is a smart and powerful tool that I can leverage in my learning and my work.

The difference is subtle. One of the big ethical issues is “Will AI eliminate human workers?”. To make it a bit more personal: “Will AI take my job?”.

While these are just a few of the important questions that are raised by this new and promising technology, there is a very old and eternal concern that affects all of us all of the time:

ChatGPT just answered this question:

Purpose of Ethics – A Clear Definition

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that deals with moral principles—what is right and wrong, good and bad, just and unjust. The purpose of ethics is to:

🔹 1.

Guide Human Behavior

Ethics provides standards to help individuals and societies determine:

  • How to act in specific situations
  • What choices are morally acceptable or unacceptable
  • How to balance personal interests with the well-being of others

🔹 2.

Promote Fairness and Justice

Ethics ensures that actions and systems are fair, equitable, and just by:

  • Encouraging respect for others
  • Preventing harm
  • Promoting responsibility and accountability

🔹 3.

Build Trust and Social Order

By setting shared values, ethics helps:

  • Establish trust between individuals, communities, and institutions
  • Maintain social cohesion and mutual respect
  • Reduce conflict through agreed-upon norms

🔹 4.

Encourage Personal Integrity

Ethics helps individuals:

  • Reflect on their own values and beliefs
  • Make decisions that align with their principles
  • Live authentically and responsibly

🔹 5.

Support Professional and Institutional Standards

In fields like medicine, law, business, education, and AI:

  • Ethics guides conduct, responsibilities, and best practices
  • Prevents misuse of power, data, or influence
  • Protects vulnerable individuals and communities

✅ In Simple Terms:

The purpose of ethics is to help people live and act well—both individually and together—by offering a moral compass that promotes justice, respect, and responsibility.

Did you catch the fact that this answer addresses the needs and responsibilities of people in society? That is you and I and the people we love. The first page of the Bible (Genesis 1) says this:

Genesis 1 Commands (to both Adam & Eve together)

In Genesis 1:27–28, God creates humanity, male and female, and gives them broad mandates:

  1. Be fruitful and multiply → Have children.
  2. Fill the earth and subdue it → Spread out, order, and govern creation.
  3. Have dominion over animals → Exercise stewardship over all living creatures.

This is often called the “Cultural Mandate.”

With that introduction, I will refer you to my first AI post: Let’s talk about proper use of AI in development.
